About Us
The Chip Hoosier Memorial Foundation was established in 2021 as a 501(c) not-for-profit to support various food ministries serving the senior citizens, homeless and working poor in the greater Indianapolis area.
The Foundation’s namesake was a humanitarian in Indianapolis who worked tirelessly to provide food for the community until his untimely death in 2006. On August 2, 2006 Clarence (Chip) Hoosier, a taxicab driver, was killed. Chip, an avid bowler, left his favorite hobby to accept a call on the east side of Indianapolis. When he pulled up to his destination, three young men approached him; one on either side of the car and one entered the back door. They pulled him out of the cab and demanded money. Since he was at the beginning of his shift, Chip had only $30 in his pocket. The men shot Chip, took his cell phone and the $30.
The impact of his death was felt deeply by the community. Prior to his death, through St. Philips/St. Bridget Food Pantry, every second Saturday of the month Chip, his family, church families and members of the community came together to prepare and distribute food. The food pantry ministry served the low-income and senior citizens surrounding the historic Indiana Avenue area. The ministry served more than 135 households each month. This ministry continued until the Covid-19 epidemic hit in 2020.
To honor Chip’s memory, the Hoosier family hosts the Annual Chip Hoosier Memorial Bowling Tournament the first weekend of August. The first tournament was held August 3, 2007. What began as a modest tournament with approximately 50 participants, has grown to a 2-day event with more than 500 participants annually, including a special event which provides scholarships for youth bowlers. All proceeds go to fund the Foundation activities.
Our vision is to continue the Hoosier Family legacy by serving the needs of our neighbors and aid youth by providing funds to further their education.
